Oia Vineyart (Argonafton Street, Oia, Santorini) will host the solo exhibition "Thira of the Aegean" by Valentini Mavrodoglou, which opens on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 17:00 to 00:00 with a vernissage event with free entrance. The printmaker and painter showcases her latest visual work in this exhibition. Admission is free.
Art curator, Paris Kapralos, notes: "Valentini Mavrodoglou draws inspiration from her experiences on the Cycladic island and dedicates her works to the uniqueness and distinctiveness of Theran landscapes. From the arid land to the flowing wine, the geologically and architecturally distinctive scenery, the artist perceives and highlights their beauty through a series of linocuts on traditional Chinese paper, using her experience of Santorini that many observe but few truly see. Her works focus on the tranquil hours of Santorini, those unique moments when the island takes on a different dimension, a new identity. Through the artist's eyes, we witness the island awakening early in the morning, relishing its tranquility and simplicity, reflecting its magnificent landscape.
It is this pursuit of simplicity that creates a unique spirit on the island, enduring even as multiple visitors arrive each year, inadvertently causing the "noise" that makes it challenging to truly appreciate its authentic essence. Despite the diversity apparent at first glance, the elements of the island remain recognizable in her works. The artist's geometric abstraction and expressive simplicity convey the atmosphere of the landscape and the archetypes that define the island. Unnecessary and intricate details are stripped away, making the artwork more straightforward and pure. The unique color in each piece adds the emotion of the moment. Valentine Mavrodoglou's exhibition offers a unique opportunity to travel through art to the beautiful Santorini and experience its magic as the artist herself does. Through her works, Mavrodoglou reminds us that art can be our path to explore the world around us and embrace the unique spirit of each place, thereby introducing a piece of the magic of this distinct corner of the Aegean, which is Santorini, into our own environment."
