"It is my duty to ensure that no one can say they were unaware." These words encapsulate the passion for photojournalism and, at the same time, the ethos of the eminent photojournalist Yannis Behrakis towards reporting and news. These very words form the main axis of depicting events during the last three decades in countries such as Chechnya, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Somalia, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Libya, Greece, Bosnia, and Iran, where he himself was present as an eyewitness, and are presented in the exhibition "Eyewitness / Yannis Behrakis" at MOMus-Museum of Photography in Thessaloniki.
As a war correspondent for Reuters, Yannis Behrakis was present in the most turbulent moments of modern global history. He was honored with the highest international distinctions for his work and inspired a younger generation of Greek photojournalists. The exhibition at MOMus-Museum of Photography in Thessaloniki hosts the photographs that were first presented at the exhibition for Yannis Behrakis at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center within the framework of Athens Photo World 2019, accompanied by projections, early material, magazines, and technical equipment from his own archive, with the kind permission of his family.
The map with all the points where Yannis Behrakis was present, covering armed conflicts and crises, along with the technical means that document the transition of photography from analog to digital era, videos with interviews and presentations by Yannis Behrakis, texts that contextualize his photographs – all aim to compose and express what characterized his work throughout the years: the simplicity of composition, the expressive immediacy, the choice of the moment, and the respect for the integrity of the event.
