ViZ Laboratory for Visual Culture presents three recent works by Vangelis Vlahos. In his recent projects, the artist appropriates newsreel footage sourced from different online networks. The themes of this found footage are mostly related to political meetings, forensic investigations and police arrests in Greece and abroad in the last 30 years. The found videos are converted into texts, which recreate a detailed outline of the videos’ original action, incorporating also technical information involved in the production of these videos: 47 seconds of an unofficial meeting between Slobodan Milosevic and the former Greek Premier Constantine Mitsotakis in 1999, the TV coverage of a meeting between Alexis Tsipras and Kyriakos Mitsotakis in 2017, and a photo of the Greek ex-Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos from a Eurogroup in 2015. By shifting attention to infraordinary details, these hyper-documents serve as meditation on the political economy of attention, virality and their role in the fleeting idea of accountability.
