Nota Kyriazi is presenting her first solo photo exhibition. She has been photographing systematically for several years now. Her special gaze approaching her subject matter is readily apparent in her images. The result is mesmerizing from the first instance. Principal subject in this exhibition is the forest. The forest has always been a source of inspiration – and not only – for painters but also for poets and musicians. {…} Nota Kyriazi loves forests. She photographs them as her gaze and her lens strive to capture not the beauty of trees but their secret life. Silence, serenity, clarity, secrecy but also a feeling of threat and foreboding, a kind of agitation are all conveyed through the photos of Kyriazi. A dreamy narrative leads you directly to the fairy tale, to forces of nature and to trolls, to demonic dances and rituals, to the gusts of wind and the rustling of leaves {…}, writes Thanos Stathopoulos in the catalog of the exhibition. Nota Kyriazi’s suggestion is to start looking differently at the world around us. On a daily basis, we are bombarded with hundreds of images from the mass and social media and we are getting addicted to a superfluous viewing of those images. With her photographs, Nota Kyriazi urges us to try to look beyond the obvious, to look not only with our eyes, but also with our senses and our soul.
Nota Kyriazi was born in Athens. Her family relocated to Montreal where she was raised and educated. She later pursued graduate studies in sociology in the United States. Upon completion of her studies there, she returned to Montreal to begin a university teaching career. Coming full circle, she now lives in Athens and teaches at Panteion University. Her experience with photography began when she was still a graduate student. It ended abruptly, only to begin again in 2012, suddenly and for no apparent reason. Since then, photography is a vital part of her life. Her photographs have been shown in group exhibitions and have been published in digital photography magazines.
