TAF / the art foundation presents the exhibition ‘A Field Guide To Getting Lost’, which opens on Thursday 5 July 2018 at 20.30 and runs through September 9. The exhibition, curated by Ismene King and Amalia Charikiopoulou, was selected through the annual Curatorial Open Call organized by TAF / the art foundation for the 8th consecutive year addressing young curators under 35 years old, giving them the opportunity to propose a contemporary art group show and implement it in TAF gallery. Τhe exhibition’s title pays direct tribute to Rebecca Solnit’s book ‘A Field Guide to Getting Lost’. In her series of autobiographical essays Solnit deals with notions of uncertainty, trust, loss, memory, desire, and place and the use of story-telling as a compass for navigating our way through the world, towards finding ourselves or equally losing ourselves. There is a moment of choice in getting lost, a conscious decision to take a path not known and to travel the journey, decidedly without the necessity of finding something or one’s self at the end of the road. The exhibition reflects upon those moments of uncertainty and ambiguity, and also relates them to those very personal uncertain moments in an artist’s practice. The liminal space of the studio or travel, the states of ‘feeling lost’, ‘being lost’ and ‘getting lost’ and ‘not knowing’ are explored as a resourceful way to exist and to create art. ‘A Field Guide to Getting Lost’ is an opportunity to share space with artists, curators and writers and to embrace and cherish those liminal states of 'not knowing', or else of ‘feeling lost'. It is a process, a research and method of collecting materials and content, which dissolve statements about certitude and rather encourage reflection on states of ambiguity.
