Sunday, October 30, 2016 - Zoumboulakis Galleries presents the exhibition Restructuring the Mirrors of the Mind by Nicolas Calas. The exhibition is a re-staging of the iconic Mirrors of the Mind exhibition which was initially curated by Nicolas Calas in Athens in 1977. Parallel to the main exhibition, the gallery also presents artworks that ‘mirror’ the concept of reflection. The exhibition will be open from October 20 to November 19, 2016.
Nicolas Calas (1907-1988) was a poet, art historian, critic and curator. He spent the longest part of his life in New York where he published a great number of influential essays in various prominent art magazines and curated many pivotal exhibitions. Calas was also a key figure in the development and dissemination of surrealist thought and collaborated with theorists and artists such as André Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Takis amongst many others.
In 1975, Nicolas Calas curated the portfolio Mirrors of the Mind in collaboration with Marian Goodman (Multiples Inc.) The portfolio includes prints and objects by Vincenzo Agnetti, Arakawa, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Bruce Nauman, Meret Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray and James Rosenquist, and was presented in a number of international exhibitions (USA, Ιtaly, Mexico, Greece) organised by Calas.
In Athens Mirrors of the Mind (Καθρέφτες του Νου) was held at Zoumboulakis Gallery, in May 1977, since Calas was a friend and collaborator of Tassos and Peggy Zoumboulakis.
On the occasion of almost 40 years since its original display, Zoumboulakis Gallery presents Restructuring the Mirrors of the Mind by Nicolas Calas, a restaging of the portfolio Mirrors of the Mind, along with precious material from the gallery’s archive and the Nicolas and Elena Calas Archive with the kind permission of the Nordic Library at Athens and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Copenhagen.
Along with the main historic exhibition the gallery also presents a series of works that conceptually deal with the phenomenon of reflection and the mirror.
